Family men on WIP Wednesday

I love showing  how my hero reacts to children. You can tell a lot about a man in such circumstances, especially in a time when single men of rank and fortune had little to do with children, even if they had much younger siblings.  Often, too, even fathers–even mothers–saw their children only when they were neat, tidy, and being presented for inspection. So the image above, of a wife feeding her baby while the rest of her children play and their father looks on, is rather sweet. I love the cushion under Mama’s feet!

My excerpt shows a father who doesn’t follow the usual custom, and my hero’s reaction to his host’s clear affection for his daughters.

When Aldridge was announced, he found Ashbury sitting cross-legged on the drawing room hearthrug, a little girl leaning on each knee, his single hand busy with charcoal over paper. The earl glanced up and smiled. “I’ll just be a moment, Aldridge. Help yourself to a seat.”

Aldridge felt one eyebrow rise. He had seen fathers who enjoyed their children’s company —his half-brother David Wakefield, for one. But he’d not before been in a home where children were permitted to make themselves at home in the drawing room, let alone where attention to them took priority over guests, even unexpected ones. Watching the vignette on the hearthrug left him charmed and wistful.

A short time later, Ashbury folded the sketch he had been working on as if it was a fan and handed it to one girl child, and picked up another folded paper from between his knees to give to the other. “There, my sweets. Make your courtesy to Lord Aldridge before you begin, if you please. Aldridge, my daughters, Mirabelle and Genevieve.”

Both girls stood to curtsey. “Good morning, Lord Aldridge,” they chorused, as their father clambered to his feet.

Aldridge bowed. “Lady Mirabelle, Lady Genevieve. May I enquire what your father has been drawing for you?”

The smaller of the two girls approached, holding out the paper. “Paper dolls, Lord Aldridge. Look. We cut out around the lines and then we can paint and dress the line of dollies.”

Ashbury had a talent. The front fold of the fan showed half a fine lady, her hand and skirt remaining uncut on the fold on one side, the rest of which had been cut away, one dainty toe stretched to the bottom of the page, the tip of her half bonnet touching the top. The details of the lady were lightly sketched in, a row of ringlets, one fine eye with lush lashes, half a Cupid’s bow in a sweet smile, the neckline of a morning gown and its high waist, a hint of lace at cuff and hem.

Aldridge smiled at the child and handed her back her paper. “Your father makes a fine sketch,” he commented.

“Now up to the desk with you, ladies,” said Ashbury. “I’ll come and admire your work after I’ve talked to Lord Aldridge. Aldridge, can I offer refreshments? An ale, perhaps?”

Aldridge demurred. “I did not mean to interrupt your day, Ashbury. I was just seeking direction to the clinic your wife supports. I’m hoping to find Bentham there.”

Ashbury had crossed to the door to speak to someone in the hall. “Possibly,” he said, as he came back into the room. “It is clinic day, and several of the doctors attend, including my wife, as it happens.”

Aldridge had heard that the lady still worked as a doctor, though he hadn’t been sure whether to believe it. He certainly didn’t know of any other peer who would allow his wife to do such a scandalous thing as provide medical services to slum dwellers.

Ashbury went on, “But do join me for an ale, if you have time. Ah!” He turned back to look at the door, as a pair of maids came in with trays. “Thank you, Sally, Maud.”

He sent the maids away and again broke protocol by serving his daughters with a drink each from one jug and two slices of seed cake, before pouring the sparkling amber contents of the other jug into two tall tumblers and passing one to Aldridge along with another slice of seed cake.

 

Do children have a place in romance? Work in Progress Wednesday

Somehow, I find myself including children in my stories. Perhaps it is because I am a mother and a grandmother and I write what I know. Or perhaps that putting children into the equation of a marriage adds an extra element with huge potential for plot and character development. However that may be, I’m back into blogging again with another Work in Progress Wednesday invitation. If you have children in your current work in progress, how about giving us a sneak peak by posting an excerpt in the comments?

Mine is from To Mend the Broken Hearted. My hero, Val, is helping in the sickroom, where two of the sick are the little girls he is responsible for. They were born after he was posted overseas, and have been at school for the entire three years he has been home. Mirrie is at the sore throat stage of the smallpox, by the way, hence the staccato delivery.

He entered the room as quietly as he could. The sickest of the schoolgirls was coughing bitterly as a maid tried to encourage her to drink something for her throat. The adult patient was sleeping. The two girls Val was responsible for had reached an arm across the gap between their beds, their hands held in the middle. They lay, each on the edge of their own bed, facing one another, talking in scattered words with long pauses between.

“I met Father.” That was Mirabelle. She had her mother’s build; small-boned and slender, but the blonde hair could have come from either side.

“Nice?” Genevieve was also fair-haired, but with the heavier build of the Ashbury line.

Mirabelle moved her head in a shallow nod. “Kind. Looks a bit like Uncle. But not angry. Kind, Genny.”

“Did you ask?”

Mirabelle shook her head. “Not yet.”

Genny roused enough to insist, “He can’t send us away again while we’re sick.”

“Kind,” Mirrie insisted.

“You think he will let us stay home?”

Mirrie nodded. “Kind,” she repeated

Val concealed his wince. He had no right to the child’s good opinion. He’d done his best to forget the pair of them, even resented Mirrie’s monthly letters because he was honour-bound to think about her long enough to write a cursory reply.

He backed to the door again, and called, “Greetings, ladies. I am on my way to bed, and thought I would come to wish you a day of healing.” The words took him across the floor to the bedsides of the two girls. He smiled at Genevieve. “I know who you are. You are Genny, my brother’s little girl.”

“Lord Ashbury,” the child answered, hope and hesitation mingled in her eyes.

“Uncle Val,” Val suggested. No doubt purists would have a fit to hear a child use such casual address, but hearing their opinion of his brother — angry? what had the old devil put them through? — made him determined to distance himself from the name Mirrie had known the man by. What did Genny call her father? Not Papa, Val was certain.

Genny rewarded him with a smile. “Uncle Val.”

“Rest, my ladies,” he told the two of them. “I need to talk to your attendants, and then I’m off to bed, for I was up all night helping Lady Ruth. I will see you this evening, and will hope to find you both much better.”

Out of the mouths of babes on WIP Wednesday

One of the excellent roles children can play in fiction is truth teller. Too young to consider consequences or balance risks, they blurt out whatever they find interesting, and then we have the fun of writing our characters reaction. So in this week’s WIP Wednesday, I’m looking for excerpts that involve a child telling the truth when one or more listeners would prefer them to remain silent.

My excerpt is from Unkept Promises.

The captain had arrived home in the early hours of the morning. Mia had to admit he had been considerately quiet, and she would not have heard him if she’d not been lying awake. Once she was up, she ordered the servants to be quiet about their work. Let the man sleep in on the first full day of his leave. If nothing else, an hour or two’s extra sleep might grease the path of the conversation she and Jules needed to have.

She was reserving judgement about their future: unwilling to risk a dream, afraid of wasting the opportunity. Perhaps he had good reasons for all the actions that offended her, as with going out to dinner on the first night he and she were in the same country in seven years.

Last night, Adarinta was muttering bitterly about her father’s defection and Mia was silently agreeing with her, though trying not to let a hint of her opinion show, when Perdana stopped his sister’s compaints. “The captain did not wish to leave us, Ada, but he is an officer in His Majesty’s Navy, and when the admiral orders him to come to dinner, it is his duty to obey. You are an officer’s daughter. It is your duty not to complain.”

Mia avoided letting her wince show, too, she hoped. Or perhaps not, for Adarinta appealed to her. “But it is unfair, is it not Ibu Mia? I wanted Papa to stay with us.”

“The Royal Navy protects the seas for the King,” Mia replied. “That is what your father does, and your Uncle Rick, and the admiral too. Imagine if the ships could not sail because a captain wanted to stay with his little girls, and Napoleon sailed past in his ship with all his soldiers!”

“That would be bad,” Perdana agreed. “Our ships are the oak wall that protects Britain and all of its lands, at home and abroad.”

“Yes,” Mia agreed. “And the mothers, wives, and children of our brave sailors must let them go, and smile, and never complain at their leaving.” She had learned that lesson in her father-in-law’s household. He and her brothers-in-law were all naval or army officers. Her sister-in-law was a naval widow; her husband having been killed in the North Sea in a battle against French ships. Men needed to go heart-whole to war, confident that their women would provide a safe and welcoming home to which they could return.

Perdana rewarded her sentiment with a smile. “Ibu Mia knows,” he told his sisters.

 

Eating on WIP Wednesday

toasting-fork-e1427826270973All my readers must realise I like food; I write so much of it. Breakfasts, picnics, formal dinners, snacks… my characters stop to refuel at regular intervals. Indeed, Lord Jonathan Grenford (Gren), the younger brother of the Marquis of Aldridge and a secondary character in Prudence in Love, spends much of the book consuming vast quantities of sustenance. But he is a young and active man, and they do manage to get through a lot of food!

So this week, I’m inviting excerpts that include food. Post yours in the comments; I’d love to see it. Here’s mine, from A Raging Madness.

Susan sent the nursemaid to let the kitchen know that three of the household’s adults would be taking nursery breakfast. Soon, Alex and Ella were sitting on the hearth rug, each with a toasting fork and an apprentice. Michael, his hands tucked inside Alex’s, sat between Alex’s knees, holding the toast carefully near the flame, and Anna curled next to Ella holding the fork by herself, with gently coaching. “Slightly further back, Anna. No, not quite so far. We want it to brown, but not burn, and we want to avoid smoke.”

Curved protectively over the child, her eyes and voice soft, she took his breath away. What a mother she would have made—could still make. She would be nearly thirty now, and still fertile, he imagined. Not that it mattered. He wanted her whether they could make children together or not. If only he could persuade her to want him.

In all their weeks of talking, she had not spoken of her marriage or of the child she had lost. Or children? Alex had refrained from prying, sure that the memories pained her, but now he wished to know all her secrets.

“Burning, Unca Alex,” Michael warned. Sure enough, while his attention had been on Ella the toast had wavered too near the flame and was well alight on one corner.

“And that, Michael,” Alex explained, “is what happens if you go too near the flame.”
